Guide to Completing Red List Assessments
If you are interested in completing a Red List Assessment for a particular species please first contact the IUCN Program Officer Lucy Harrison (iucnshark@gmail.com). Lucy will send you any previous assessment available for the species and put you in touch with any other SSG members that may be of assistance.
This powerpoint presentation provides a useful introduction to the Red Listing process.
Here are a list of documents that will assist you with the RLA process including blank assessment forms, guidelines and some example assessments.
Each assessment will require the completion of two forms:
-
The Red List Assessment Form (here).
Please take care to fill in all relevant sections of the form. Brief instructions are provided on the form to assist you. Remember, the more information you can provide to support a chosen Red List Category the better. Please also indicate if the assessment is a New Assessment or Reassessment.
-
The Threats, Habitat and Conservation Actions Classification
Scheme (here).
A completed spreadsheet should accompany the Red List Assessment Form for each species assessed. Please fill out each of the three worksheets. Those lines highlighted in Threats section are the threats most related to elasmobranch species.
Example assessments are provided here to assist you with your RLA. Please use these examples to assist you in filling in the RLA forms. These examples cover a Near Threatened species, a Least Concern species and a Data Deficient species. The Least Concern species assessment includes an example of the completed Threats, Habitats and Conservation Actions form.
