The mystery of the longlived British Columbian dogfish has been solved

The mystery of the longlived British Columbian dogfish has been solved. Shark scientists had always marvelled at the enormous diversity in the life histories of the spiny or piked dogfish, especially the population which lives to the age of 80. Other populations around the world live half as long. Population biologists simply dismissed this as just another one of many unexplained shark oddities. It is quite typical for life spans and other life history traits, such as growth and reproductive output to can vary with temperature and latitude in the same species.

The BC dogfish has just been found to be a new species. This species has been fished unsustainably for decades - even worse, scientists have been calling it by the wrong name. A new paper led by Dave Ebert of Moss Landing Marine Laboratory in California has found morphological and molecular differences between the North East Pacific spotted spiny dogfish and spiny dogfish elsewhere. The new name for the BC species is spotted spiny dogfish (Squalus suckleyi) and is distinct from the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) found elsewhere around the world. This new species is found throughout the North Pacific ranging from Korea through Alaska down to Baja California, but is most common off BC and Washington.

A new shark is discovered every two weeks and a large number of fished species are turning out to be complexes of two or more new or yet to be named species. The mixed bag of unidentified sharks in fisheries catches means that the less productive species risk declining without being noticed.

http://www.mapress.com/zootaxa/2010/f/z02612p040f.pdf
